Understanding fabric choices for beginners can be a daunting task if you don’t sew. The first time you step into a fabric store, you may feel overwhelmed by the choices.


My goal with this article is help you learn more about the difference between a woven fabric and a knit fabric is made. Then I will share some of the common types fabrics from each of these categories. Finally I’ll explain which one is best for a beginner sewer and why.

Let’s take a closer look at how they are made

As you can see in the above image, the woven fabrics are created by weaving lengthwise fibers (Warp) and crosswise fibers (Weft) at right angles to create the fabric.

Knitted fabric is a textile that results from knitting the process of interlocking loops of yarn. Its properties are distinct from woven fabric in that it is more flexible and can be more readily constructed into smaller pieces, making it ideal for socks, hats and clothing.
